ABOUT THE MUSIC PROGRAM

MUSIC LITERACY- We will follow the TEA Music Literacy TEKS in Music Class

Rhythm Reading

K-5th students will learn to identify how many beats are in a song
They will learn to read and perform rhythms
They will be able to play specific rhythms on instruments and vocally
They will learn to create their own rhythms and perform them
Rhythms will grow in complexity and arrangement as we go from Kinder through 5th grade

Solfegé-

Students will learn to use solfegé handsigns to read music while singing
Starting in 1st grade with so-mi, and will work their way to learning the whole scale by 5th grade
We will use the Kodaly Method to learn to read music using the handsigns as we sing
- Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do

Treble clef lines & spaces-.

Starting 3rd grade students will learn to ready the letter names on the treble clef 5 line staff
We will transfer this knowledge to instruments including the xylophone, metalliphone and several other instruments
Starting in 4th grade students will learn to read music and play it on recorders

PERFORMANCE AND MOVEMENT- We will follow the TEA's Performance and Movement TEKS in Music class

In Class Performance-

In Music Classes we will sing, play instruments, do body percussion as well as move our bodies to the beat

Movement-

In music we will be playing lots of movement games that also double as sight reading material for us to learn to read music together
We will do fun folk dances and learn about how music, art and dance have been an important part of world culture
Music is meant to be felt and experienced, so we will work in music class to express our selves through movement when appropriate

Stage Performances-

Kinder through 5th grade will get to be a part of a musical performance/play each year
These will be grade specific and dates will come home for these performances through homeroom teachers
The official dates will also be posted on the "Grade Level Plays" page on on this website
Practice tracks will be published on this website for students who would like to practice at home when their musical is close to happening
Students will practice for these plays/performances during the school day and perform them in the AM during school and may also perform in the evening (depending on the grade level) for parents to see at 5:30pm on their designated performance date

We will need parent volunteers to help decorate the stage

MUSIC HISTORY- We will follow the TEA's Music History/Appreciation TEKS in Music Class

K-2nd

Students will learn about specific composers lives and music
They will learn about the different instrument families and be able to identify them by seeing and hearing them by 2nd grade
They will learn about how to use music to help enrich their lives
We will learn and listen to music from other cultures around the world

3rd-5th

We will learn about how music has evolved throughout history along side the cultures of the world
- We will learn how as people travel around the world they take their music and culture with them while studying world music
- We will make connections between present day and the musical history that lead us to have the music we have today
We will learn about the instrument families, their development as well as their music and the Symphony Orchestra starting in Roman Times to present
We will review past composers students know about as well as new composers and see how their music fits into historical context using a worldwide time line
At the end of the year 5th grade will pick school appropriate contemporary composers for the school to study in music class the last 5 weeks of school
